The Silent Film: An Introduction

The founding generation of cinema: 30-40 years in which the art form emerges, matures, and produces many of its enduring masterworks. For many—both practitioners and observers—still the quintessential realization of cinematic art. Possible films for discussion: Intolerance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Our Hospitality, Potemkin, The Lodger, Metropolis, Napoleon, Sunrise, The Passion of Joan of Arc, An Andalusian Dog, Man with a Movie Camera, Earth, A Story of Floating Weeds, Modern Times, The Artist. One course.

Contemporary Documentary Film

Examination of the art, content, technology, and life of documentary film, with a decided emphasis on the American tradition. Explores contemporary filmmaking approaches that fall under broad categorization of “documentary,” showing how documentary filmmakers choose and interpret their subjects, themes, and points of view. Analyzes form, technique, and impact of documentary filmmaking. Taught at Duke Kunshan University. Instructor consent required.
